Black Oxide

Low-Profile Protection. Clean, Classic Finish.

Black oxide is a conversion coating that enhances the corrosion resistance and appearance of ferrous metal parts — without altering critical dimensions. At Valkyrie Coatings, we offer professional black oxide finishing for tools, fasteners, and precision components that demand a clean look and functional protection. Black oxide is widely used in:

  • Firearms and tools – Screws, pins, triggers, barrels, slides
  • Fasteners and hardware – Bolts, nuts, washers, shims
  • Machined components – Shafts, gears, spacers, couplings
  • Industrial equipment – Fixtures, clamps, jigs
  • Decorative metalwork – Where a classic, matte-black look is preferred

Why Choose Black Oxide?

It’s often used where parts need a finish that won’t interfere with fit, threads, or movement, when you need:

  • Dimensional stability – Adds virtually no thickness (≤0.000030″)
  • Matte black appearance – Uniform and non-reflective
  • Mild corrosion resistance – Especially when paired with post-treatment oils
  • Improved lubricity – Helps reduce galling and seizing in assembly
  • Cost-effective finishing – Great for high volumes or low-budget protection

Our Process

  • Surface Cleaning – Parts are degreased and cleaned to remove oils, rust, or residue.

  • Black Oxide Conversion – Immersion in a room-temp chemical bath converts the surface of the metal to magnetite (Fe₃O₄).
  • Oil Sealant – A penetrating oil or water-displacing fluid is applied to enhance corrosion resistance and deepen color.

  • Drying & Inspection – Parts are dried, cooled, and visually inspected for finish consistency.

  • Final Inspection – Each part is checked for finish quality before packaging.
